AI cloud could top $1 trillion a year by 2030. Who actually made money since ChatGPT?

The news: a BlackRock report, reported by The Economic Times, says analysts expect the cloud revenue of the hyperscalers (the giant cloud providers such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google) to pass $1 trillion a year by 2030. The main driver is the computing power needed to train and run AI.

A number that big makes every AI-linked investment look like the right one. So we checked. We backtested a plain monthly SIP in three places an Indian investor might go for "the AI trade": the Nasdaq 100, Nifty IT and Bitcoin, which the report ties to AI directly. Each SIP starts in December 2022, the first full month after ChatGPT launched.

+26.56%a year, Nasdaq 100 SIP since Dec 2022
+28.52%a year, Bitcoin SIP since Dec 2022
−4.27%a year, Nifty IT SIP since Dec 2022
Line chart of a monthly SIP started in December 2022, as a multiple of the money put in. Bitcoin ends at 1.66 times after peaking near 2.65 times, the Nasdaq 100 at 1.61 times, and Nifty IT at 0.92 times, below the money put in.
Same story, same start date, three very different results. Bitcoin's SIP had been worth 2.65 times the money put in before it gave much of that back. Nifty IT's is below the money put in.

What the BlackRock report says

The report's argument is that computing capacity ("compute") is turning into an economic resource in its own right, and that AI and digital assets are growing into each other. In its own words, AI is "machine-native intelligence" while digital assets are "machine-native money". In short:

  • Cloud revenue: analyst estimates put hyperscaler cloud revenue above $1 trillion a year by 2030, driven by AI computing demand.
  • Compute as an asset: standardised claims on computing capacity could be financed and traded like other assets, and settled on blockchains.
  • AI agents that pay: software agents that act on their own need to make many tiny payments. The report expects stablecoins and payment protocols such as x402 to handle that better than card networks.
  • Still early: the report itself says trading in compute claims and agent-driven payments is modest today.

What a monthly SIP did in each, since ChatGPT

A fixed amount invested at each month-end from December 2022. Returns are money-weighted (XIRR) and before tax.

Since Dec 2022A yearWorthWorst fall
Nasdaq 100 ($)26.56%1.61×10.2%
Bitcoin ($)28.52%1.66×49.5%
Nifty IT (₹)−4.27%0.92×39.3%

"Worth" is the SIP's value divided by the money put in: 0.92× means every ₹100 invested is now worth about ₹92.

The Nasdaq 100: where the cloud revenue actually lands

Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet, the three biggest hyperscalers, all sit inside the Nasdaq 100. So the $1 trillion forecast is mostly a forecast about companies in this index, and the index is at an all-time high this month. A SIP started in December 2022 has made 26.56% a year, with a worst month-end fall of just 10.2% along the way.

The longer record is less comfortable. Over 41 years, from October 1985, a monthly SIP in the Nasdaq 100 made 14.24% a year, but the index lost 81.1% after the dot-com peak of March 2000 and took until 2015 to get back. That was the last time a new technology made this index look unstoppable.

Nifty IT: the AI boom did not show up here

Many Indian investors treat Nifty IT as their technology exposure. Since ChatGPT, a monthly SIP in it has returned −4.27% a year. The index peaked in December 2024 and is 28.0% below that peak.

The forecast in the report is about the cloud providers' revenue. Indian IT companies mostly sell services, not cloud capacity, so a boom in hyperscaler revenue does not automatically become their revenue. The last three years show that clearly. Over the long run the index has done well: a SIP from January 1996 made 17.10% a year. But it also fell 88.2% after 2000, and over the last ten years the SIP made 8.65% a year.

Bitcoin: the "machine-native money" half of the story

The report links AI to digital assets, and Bitcoin's SIP has the best number in the table: 28.52% a year since December 2022. That figure hides the path. At its best the SIP was worth 2.65× the money put in; it is now worth 1.66×, after a 49.5% fall, and Bitcoin sits 27.2% below its high. Over ten years the SIP made 47.08% a year, and in that time it fell 75.5% at its worst.

The report's own caution is worth repeating: payments by AI agents and markets for compute are still small. The link between AI and Bitcoin's price is a thesis for now.

What to take from this

A revenue forecast tells you where money is expected to go. It does not tell you which investment will pay you, or how deep the falls will be on the way. The same AI story, with the same start date, gave a monthly investor anything from −4% to +28% a year, and falls of 10% to 50%.

So before acting on any headline, check two things on real data: what your own SIP would have made, and whether you could have sat through its worst fall. You can run all three of these in the Strategy Lab, change the start date, and add a rule that moves to cash in a fall.

Questions people ask

Will hyperscaler cloud revenue really cross $1 trillion by 2030?

That is an analyst estimate quoted in a BlackRock report, not a certainty. The report says AI computing demand is the main driver. It is a forecast of company revenue, not of any investment's return.

Which companies are the hyperscalers?

The term usually means the largest cloud providers: Amazon (AWS), Microsoft (Azure) and Alphabet (Google Cloud). All three are in the Nasdaq 100.

Has Nifty IT benefited from the AI boom?

Not so far. A monthly SIP in Nifty IT from December 2022 to August 2026 returned −4.27% a year, and the index is 28.0% below its December 2024 peak.

What has a Nasdaq 100 SIP returned?

26.56% a year since December 2022, and 14.24% a year over 41 years from October 1985, in US dollars and before tax. The long-run figure includes an 81.1% fall after 2000.

Is Bitcoin an AI investment?

The BlackRock report argues that digital assets could become the payment layer for AI agents, but it also says that use is still small today. A Bitcoin SIP from December 2022 made 28.52% a year, with a 49.5% fall along the way.

How we measured: month-end prices, a fixed amount invested every month, returns money-weighted (XIRR) and before tax. Nasdaq 100 and Bitcoin are in US dollars (Yahoo Finance, Coin Metrics), to September 2026. Nifty IT is in rupees, read from NSE factsheets and approximate, to August 2026. "Worst fall" is the largest month-end drop from a previous high inside the window. Source for the news: The Economic Times, reporting a BlackRock report.
